-Crossing

Between 2013 and 2017, I took photographs in my neighbourhood of people crossing the road. This moment is interesting to me as it is an everyday activity we all share. We stand within ourselves at that moment of crossing, fully aware of our environment.

From these pictures I created silhouettes which then became the images on road signs. Creating unique signs enabled me to show the variety of characters sharing the street together - to represent London in all its multiplicity. I wanted to reflect the whole community back to itself.  My use of the road sign ‘Warning’ triangle was to say ‘take care of’ each other - as we would when children or the elderly cross the road - not ‘beware of’ each other as was once interpreted.

However these signs were not made to be generic or generalise. Each sign was placed as close as safely possible to the site of the original photograph. Our differences seem endangered in these times, with the signs I hoped to personalise individuality and hold it up as a precious thing. The intention was to honour the diversity of our city.
